A DECISÃO
Quando Alfenim decidiu que andaria sobre as águas, ninguém levou aquilo a sério. Nem eu que era seu melhor amigo. Tínhamos 18 anos, minto: ela sim tinha 18 anos completos, pois era de fevereiro e eu faria 18 somente em novembro. E a decisão dela me afetou como também afligiu a Pedro, a pedra.
Mas determinação e disciplina não lhe faltava. Perguntou primeiro aos peixes do lago perto de sua casa, uma lagoinha límpida e pequena quase um nada na imensidão de seus propósitos, como era viver sob as águas. Depois deu de falar com os passarinhos como o Conde Matarazzo na lira de Rubem Braga, para saber se havia muito de matemática e física nesta arte de voar, subir e planar.
Eu ali ficava ruborizado de vergonha. Mas a seguia. Alguém podia vê-la conversar com peixes e pássaros e me colocaria a pecha de mais um sujeito estranho solto pelas redondezas. E com ela ia. Pois naquele tempo a barra ainda era bem pesada – o ano era 1982, e estávamos dando os primeiros passsos para redemocratização do País. E com certeza quando batiam em sua porta, não era só o leiteiro lá fora.

When Alfenim decided he would walk on water, nobody took it seriously. Nor was I his best friend. We were 18, I lie: she was indeed 18, because it was February and I would only be 18 in November. And her decision affected me as well as Peter the stone.
But determination and discipline were not lacking. He first asked the fish in the lake near his house, a small, clear pond almost nothing in the immensity of his purposes, what it was like to live under the water. Then he started talking to birds like Conde Matarazzo on Rubem Braga’s lyre, to find out if there was a lot of mathematics and physics in this art of flying, climbing and gliding.
I stood there blushing with embarrassment. But he followed her. Someone could see her chatting with fish and birds and would put the blame on me as yet another strange subject loose in the vicinity. And with her it went. Because at that time the bar was still very heavy – the year was 1982, and we were taking the first steps towards the country’s re-democratization. And certainly when there was a knock on your door, it wasn’t just the milkman out there.
